The Dodge Durango is coming back. And this time, Stellantis is not holding back.

After years of uncertainty about the SUV’s future, Stellantis has officially confirmed that a new generation Durango is in development. With billions committed to North American manufacturing and the Hurricane inline-six already proven in production, the next Durango is shaping up to be the most capable and most powerful three-row SUV Mopar has ever built.

New Durango Officially Confirmed

Stellantis confirmed the new generation Durango is in production development, with billions committed to American manufacturing to make it happen. This is not speculation. The new Durango is being built, and it is arriving within the next few years.

The new platform is engineered from the ground up for the next decade of Durango. It will be larger than the current model — expect bigger dimensions across length, width, and wheelbase — giving three-row seating real breathing room for all passengers. The current Durango’s third row is serviceable. The next generation’s third row is expected to be genuinely usable for adults on longer trips.

Stellantis has confirmed the Hurricane twin-turbocharged inline-six will be available, meaning the Durango could offer both the Standard Output at 420 horsepower and the High Output at 540 to 550 horsepower across the lineup.

Hurricane I6 Replaces the HEMI: What That Means

The Hurricane is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six with forged internals, dual Garrett turbochargers, and a closed-deck aluminum block. It delivers serious power with better fuel efficiency than the outgoing HEMI V8 — and it can run on regular fuel in Standard Output form.

For the Durango lineup, expect two Hurricane variants at minimum:

  • Hurricane SO (Standard Output): 420 horsepower, 468 lb-ft of torque. Base for performance trims. A significant upgrade over the naturally aspirated 5.7-liter HEMI’s 360 horsepower.
  • Hurricane HO (High Output): 540 to 550 horsepower, 521 lb-ft of torque. Available in premium and performance-oriented trims. Outpowers the current SRT 392 by a substantial margin.

The Hurricane is already proven in the Ram 1500 RHO, the Dodge Charger Six Pack, and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. Moving it into the Durango is a natural expansion of what has already been a successful platform rollout.

The SRT Performance Question: 710 Horsepower Territory

Here is where the speculation gets exciting. The current Durango SRT 392 makes 475 horsepower from a 6.4-liter HEMI V8. The Durango SRT Hellcat makes 710 horsepower from a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI. Those are the benchmarks the new Durango SRT has to clear — or exceed.

With the Hurricane High Output already at 550 horsepower in production form, and Stellantis engineering room to tune further for an SRT application, a Hurricane-powered Durango SRT could realistically push 600 or more horsepower. The Hurricane’s forged internals were built with boost headroom in mind. A purpose-tuned SRT calibration, potentially with a higher-output turbocharger setup, could bring the new Durango SRT very close to Hellcat territory — or surpass it.

Add in the possibility of a hybrid-assisted powertrain and the ceiling gets even higher. Stellantis has been developing electrified variants of its truck and SUV platforms. A Hurricane hybrid in the Durango SRT could use electric torque fill to close the gap between turbocharged power peaks, delivering a broader, more immediate power delivery that rivals the supercharged HEMI in every driving scenario.

How the New Durango Stacks Up Against the Competition

The three-row family SUV segment is dominated by the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Explorer, with the Jeep Grand Cherokee L and Kia Telluride also claiming significant market share. The Durango has always competed in this space, but it has done so as the “performance option” — the one you buy when you want a family hauler that feels alive.

The new Durango doubles down on that identity. Expected larger dimensions will give it genuine interior space to compete with the Tahoe. The Hurricane powertrain will deliver efficiency the V8 competition cannot match. And the SRT variant will offer performance that no three-row competitor from GM or Ford even attempts.

The Durango has always had Mopar DNA. The next generation will have it by the truckload.

What to Expect

  • Three-row seating — Durango stays a family hauler with improved rear-row space
  • Hurricane I6 power across the lineup — 420hp to 550hp+
  • SRT trim with 600hp+ target, Hellcat-class potential
  • Serious towing capability — class-leading target
  • New platform with modern ADAS and tech stack
  • Larger dimensions than current generation
  • Expected arrival within the next 2-3 model years
