Stellantis Hurricane Inline-Six: The Engine Reshaping Dodge, Ram & Jeep

The Stellantis Hurricane inline-six engine: 420hp SO and 550hp HO variants, twin Garrett turbos, and HurriCrate availability for Dodge, Ram, and Jeep platforms. Full breakdown.

Stellantis built something special with the Hurricane inline-six engine. While everyone debates the return of the Hemi V8, this twin-turbo six is already reshaping what Dodge, Jeep, and Ram can do — and it deserves a real spotlight.

What Is the Hurricane Inline-Six?

The Hurricane is a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, first revealed in 2022 and launched in production with the 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. From there it expanded to the Ram 1500, Dodge Charger Six Pack, and Jeep Wagoneer lineup. All Hurricane engines share the same foundation: 84mm bore, 90mm stroke, twin 54mm Garrett turbochargers, direct injection at 5,075 PSI, an air-to-water intercooler, forged steel connecting rods, and a closed-deck aluminum block — significantly stronger than an open-deck design.

Standard Output vs High Output

Stellantis offers two Hurricane variants:

  • Standard Output (SO): 420 hp at 5,200 RPM, 468 lb-ft of torque. Cast aluminum pistons, single high-pressure fuel pump, 22 PSI boost. Runs on regular fuel. Found in the Dodge Charger Six Pack R/T, Ram 1500, Jeep Wagoneer, and Grand Wagoneer.
  • High Output (HO): Forged aluminum pistons with oil-jet cooling, dual high-pressure fuel pumps, dual-passage intercooler, 9.5:1 compression, 30 PSI boost. Ram 1500 RHO and Ram Limited make 540 hp / 521 lb-ft. The Dodge Charger Six Pack Scat Pack pushes it to 550 hp / 531 lb-ft at a 6,200 RPM redline.

Ram 1500 RHO: The Truck Version

The Ram 1500 RHO (Ram High Output) is the performance flagship of the Ram 1500 lineup, powered by the High Output Hurricane making 540 horsepower and 521 pound-feet of torque. It pairs with a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic and standard 4WD with a locking rear differential. This is the most capable performance half-ton truck Stellantis has ever built.

HurriCrate: Available as Crate Engines

Both versions of the Hurricane are available as crate engines through Mopar Direct Connection. The Standard Output is called the Cat One and the High Output is the Cat Three — named after hurricane categories. These are bolt-in performance upgrades for any platform built around the Hurricane architecture.

Hurricane Four-Cylinder: The Next Evolution

Stellantis has confirmed a Hurricane four-cylinder sibling is in development. This smaller-displacement turbocharged four-cylinder will share architecture with the inline-six — same philosophy, same build quality, similar technology — but tuned for efficiency and lower entry pricing. Expect it to appear in lighter, more fuel-economy-focused applications where the inline-six would be overkill on cost or weight.

This four-cylinder variant is a strong candidate for base powertrain duties in the confirmed 2027 Ram midsize truck, and possibly future compact Jeep applications. While power output numbers have not been confirmed, turbocharged four-cylinders in this architecture could realistically produce 270 to 320 horsepower — more than enough for a midsize truck or crossover.

Real-World Ownership: Fuel Economy and Daily Driving

The Hurricane’s real-world advantages go beyond horsepower numbers. Here is what actual ownership looks like compared to the outgoing HEMI V8:

  • Ram 1500 RHO fuel economy: approximately 15 mpg city, 19 mpg highway — a meaningful improvement over the TRX’s 10 mpg city, 14 mpg highway.
  • Regular fuel capable: The Standard Output Hurricane runs on 87 octane regular fuel. The High Output prefers 93 premium but can run on 87 without engine damage. This matters for daily driving costs.
  • Maintenance: Comparable to any modern turbocharged engine. Oil changes are the same cadence. The twin turbos add a component to the maintenance schedule, but Stellantis engineered the Hurricane for 150,000-mile-plus durability. Real-world reports from Ram 1500 RHO and Charger Six Pack owners have been largely positive.
  • Cold weather performance: The twin-turbo architecture spools quickly and delivers full torque at lower RPMs than a naturally aspirated engine, which actually helps in cold conditions where immediate throttle response matters.

For anyone coming from a HEMI V8, the Hurricane transition is not a sacrifice. It is an upgrade in almost every measurable way except one: exhaust note. The inline-six does not make the same wall-shaking V8 rumble, and that is the one honest trade-off for enthusiasts who love the sound of a big-block American engine.

Tuning Potential: What the Aftermarket Can Unlock

The Hurricane High Output was not just built for production power levels. The forged steel connecting rods, forged aluminum pistons, closed-deck block, and dual high-pressure fuel pumps were chosen with boost headroom in mind. Stellantis built the HO to handle more than it ships with.

Early aftermarket tuning on the Dodge Charger Six Pack Scat Pack and Ram 1500 RHO has shown the Hurricane responds well to ECU calibration. Conservative stage-one tunes targeting 600+ horsepower have been demonstrated without hardware changes. More aggressive builds with upgraded turbos, intercoolers, and fueling are already in progress.

The HurriCrate Cat Three (High Output) crate engine through Mopar Direct Connection also opens custom build opportunities for shops that want to drop a purpose-built performance engine into a restomod or purpose-built track machine. The architecture is there. The aftermarket is just getting started.
