BMW just gave journalists their first real seat time in the combustion-engine half of the next-generation 3 Series, and the headline number is out: the new range-topping BMW M350 xDrive makes 437 hp (443 PS in Europe) from an updated B58 turbocharged inline six, backed by 48V mild hybrid assistance. BMW brought press to its Miramas proving grounds in southern France — the same facility used for final validation before a car reaches production — to sample the car across four completely different driving environments before its design goes public.

The wheelbase grows by 9mm, and the front and rear tracks widen slightly too. Tire sizes are up across the board — 245-section fronts and 275-section rears on 20-inch wheels, the largest wheel-and-tire package BMW has ever fitted to an M Performance 3 Series — and for the first time, adaptive M suspension is standard equipment rather than an option, alongside a controlled rear differential lock and variable sport steering.

At the rear, BMW added a Gurney flap, a “Vertical Dynamics Platform,” controlled shock absorbers, and a structural brace the engineers call the Driving Dynamics Brace, on top of the xDrive hardware already doing the torque-vectoring work. Drift Moment: A Rear-Drive Mode Coming Later via OTA Update

The most talked-about feature won’t even ship at launch. Drift Moment, activated with a button on the Central Display, sends the engine’s drive fully to the rear wheels for what BMW frankly describes as maximizing “the joy of going sideways.” It arrives sometime in 2027 via Remote Software Upgrade — and critically, that update reaches every M350 already delivered to customers by that point, not just new production. On BMW’s wet-handling course, disabling stability control entirely showed a preview of the behavior: the AWD system already biases hard to the rear under power, with BMW citing a current front-to-rear torque split as extreme as 20-80, a long way from the roughly 40-60 split used as its typical cruising default.

Software Borrowed From BMW’s Electric Heart of Joy

BMW frames its combustion-engine driving software as an adaptation of the same “Heart of Joy” philosophy built for the fully electric i3, working with the same functional principle but slower actuators. Where an electric motor can shuffle torque between axles in milliseconds, a combustion engine takes roughly 100 milliseconds to spool torque up or down — slow enough for a driver to notice. BMW’s answer is to lean on faster mechanical actuators instead: the brakes, the electronically controlled xDrive clutch, and the rear differential lock, all coordinated by a central controller reading a six-axis motion sensor in real time.

What We Still Don’t Know

BMW hasn’t published final weight figures, and the 4.1-second 0-62 mph claim comes with an asterisk — engineers wouldn’t confirm on record whether that number is measured with a one-foot rollout, a method some BMW M press materials have quietly started using because it shaves a few tenths off the published figure. Full specs, pricing, and the car’s uncamouflaged design are still to come, with production of the ICE models slated to start in the second half of 2026.
