An exposed cone filter makes an intake easy to notice. What it cannot show you is the temperature of the air entering the engine or the power the complete system produces. Before comparing appearances, ask a more useful question: where can air reach the filter, and what evidence supports the claimed improvement?

The answer is not simply that closed boxes are good and exposed filters are bad. Ford lists an open-element airbox with a cold-air inlet, illustrating why those descriptions are not mutually exclusive. Start with the air source, not the filter shape

For this comparison, a sealed airbox means an enclosure around the filter with a connected outside-air inlet. It does not mean a container with no openings: air still needs a route in and a filtered route out. Ask to see the relevant mating surfaces and the final installed configuration. Does the documentation identify a dedicated inlet? Does it describe a seal that is absent from the product photograph? Is the photographed assembly complete? These questions are more useful than assuming that a shiny panel must isolate the filter from everything around it.

Open does not automatically mean ineffective

Avoid turning the schematic comparison into a universal ranking. Ford’s M-9603-FSTA product page describes an open-element airbox and a cold-air inlet in the same system, with listed applications including the 2013–2018 Focus ST and 2016–2018 Focus RS. It is a useful counterexample to the claim that a visible filter necessarily has no outside-air supply.

Chevrolet likewise describes an open-element filter in its 5.3L Cold Air Intake System, part 84794977. Its stated restriction reduction is not a temperature measurement or an equivalent percentage increase in engine power. Treat the named metric as the named metric, rather than converting it into a different benefit.

Sound belongs on the list, but in its own category. Chevrolet’s 2019 Silverado HD owner’s manual includes the air cleaner and inlet/outlet piping in its discussion of noise-emission maintenance. That supports treating intake hardware as relevant to sound; it does not establish the power effect of an aftermarket change.

If you want a different induction character, write that down honestly as your goal. Ask for recordings that help you judge your normal driving experience. You do not need to describe a sound preference as a horsepower improvement to justify enjoying it.

Use those points when requesting the evidence behind a power claim, rather than accepting an isolated peak figure.

Ask whether the report identifies the exact vehicle, intake and other modifications. Request the measurement location for any temperature trace. Keep temperature evidence separate from power evidence: a claim about one should not automatically become a claim about the other. For a daily-driven build, tell the supplier what you actually want to understand. You might ask for evidence covering warmed-up commuting conditions rather than only a single advertised run. Before ordering, request a written list of included components and required supporting work. Ask whether the advertised result describes the intake alone or an intake-and-calibration package. Record those as different proposals. A package result does not tell you how much of the outcome belongs to the exposed filter by itself.

The schematic comparison gives you a starting point: follow the air source. It does not crown an exposed cone or a closed box as universally superior.
