The new wheels look right. The tires sit inside the fenders, nothing touches while the car is parked, and the stance finally matches the picture in your head. Then a turn reveals a scraping sound. The missing question was not simply whether the assembly fit in one position. It was whether it had enough room throughout its movement.
That distinction should guide your buying decision: parked clearance is not driving clearance. Tire dimensions, wheel position and suspension movement have to work together. Before approving a wheel-and-tire package, ask what establishes that the complete combination works on your actual car.
Follow One Front Corner Through Its Movement
Imagine looking down at a front tire inside its wheelwell. Pointing straight ahead, the tire occupies one footprint. Turning changes that footprint: the front and rear portions sweep into different areas. Now consider the same corner from the side. During compression, the wheel moves upward relative to the body. Ask for the exact tire model’s overall diameter, section width, measuring rim and approved rim-width range; compare those with the proposed wheel.
Make your comparison sheet specific: current tire model, proposed tire model, current wheel width and proposed wheel width. An answer based only on “both use the same diameter wheels” leaves important fitment questions unanswered. Wheel Width and Offset Must Be Read Together
Offset locates the mounting face relative to the wheel’s centerline. Enkei’s wheel-dimension reference defines positive inset with the mounting face toward the outside of that centerline, and negative inset toward the inside. This is a geometric definition, not an approval for a particular vehicle.

The Fender Is Only One Boundary
A wide outer flare does not establish clearance behind it. USTMA’s clearance guidance includes the body, brakes and suspension at all four wheel positions, throughout suspension travel and full left/right steering. Tire capacity or diameter alone cannot establish that clearance.
Give the shop a question rather than a diagnosis: “Which component is closest, at what steering position, and at what suspension position?” Ask whether the liner and inner suspension have both been considered. A request like this is more useful than assuming that every rubbing sound comes from the fender lip.
Lowering Changes the Starting Position
Lowering generally brings the body closer to the tire at rest. That smaller visible gap does not, by itself, reveal the remaining suspension travel. Spring, damper and other suspension details must be considered as a system. Bilstein’s lowering guide emphasizes matching lowering springs with suitable dampers rather than treating shorter springs as an isolated change.
Do not turn that into the blanket claim that every lowered car rubs or every lowering kit loses the same travel. Build a Useful Fitment Request Before Buying
Start with the vehicle’s requirements rather than copying the tires currently installed. NHTSA’s tire-size guidance directs owners to the manual or Tire and Loading Information Label and to the original size or another vehicle-manufacturer-recommended size. Clearance does not replace the vehicle’s tire specifications.
