Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT: How an SUV Conquered the Nürburgring

Coupe-only, twin-turbo V8, 7:38.925 at the Nordschleife and 659 PS after the 2024 update: here’s what makes the Cayenne Turbo GT the most track-focused Cayenne.

SUVs are not supposed to set lap records at the Nürburgring. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT did it anyway. When it arrived for the 2022 model year, Porsche took the Cayenne Turbo Coupe, added power, lowered it, stiffened it and ran it through a development program that ended with a record lap of the Nordschleife. It remains one of the most extreme answers yet to the question of how far a high-performance SUV can be pushed.

Key Takeaways

  • The Cayenne Turbo GT is offered only in the Coupe body style.
  • It uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.
  • It set an SUV lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a time of 7:38.925.
  • The 2024 update raised output to 659 PS, roughly 650 hp.
  • Carbon-ceramic brakes, rear-axle steering and a titanium exhaust are standard.
  • It is not the quickest Cayenne in a straight line; the all-electric Cayenne Turbo beats it.

A Cayenne Built for the Track

Porsche introduced the Cayenne Turbo GT in 2021 as the most performance-focused Cayenne it had ever built. It is based on the Cayenne Coupe, with its sloping roofline and sportier stance, and Porsche made no attempt to offer it in the regular SUV body. That choice says a lot about the car. This is a vehicle for drivers who value handling and speed over maximum cargo space.

Compared with a standard Cayenne, the GT sits 15 millimeters lower, runs a wider front track with more negative camber and gets a far more aggressive chassis calibration. Its adaptive air suspension and dampers are tuned with track use in mind, turning a family-sized luxury SUV into something that genuinely enjoys being driven hard.

The Nürburgring Record

In June 2021, development driver Lars Kern lapped the full 20.832-kilometer Nordschleife in 7:38.925, setting a new benchmark for SUVs. That is a time many dedicated sports cars would be proud of, and it was set in a vehicle that still offers four seats, a usable cargo area and the everyday comfort expected of a luxury Porsche.

The record gave the Turbo GT an identity that went beyond spec-sheet bragging. It showed that the engineering changes were more than cosmetic and that the Cayenne platform could take serious track punishment lap after lap.

More Power for the 2024 Update

With the updated Cayenne lineup, Porsche raised the Turbo GT’s output again. According to Porsche’s own press kit, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 now makes 659 PS (485 kW), 19 PS more than before, which works out to about 650 hp. The pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft and timing chain drive were all revised to handle sustained high loads. Porsche quotes a 0-100 km/h time of 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 305 km/h, or about 190 mph.

A titanium sports exhaust with center-mounted tailpipes gives the GT its own voice, while a carbon-fiber roof, diffuser trim and spoiler sideplates help it look the part. Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus and rear-axle steering are all standard, and exclusive 22-inch GT Design wheels finish the package. Because of emissions rules, the updated Turbo GT is not offered in Europe and several other markets.

Not the Fastest Cayenne Anymore

It is worth being precise about where the Turbo GT sits today. It is the most track-focused combustion Cayenne, but it is not the quickest Cayenne in a straight line. Porsche’s all-electric Cayenne Turbo, part of the new Cayenne Electric range, has far more peak output and beats the GT in acceleration. What the Turbo GT still offers is a very different character: a snarling V8, a chassis set up around lap times rather than launch figures, and a driving experience built around engagement.

Living With a Turbo GT

Despite its focus, the Turbo GT remains a usable daily driver. The rear sports seats are comfortable for adults, the cargo area is still generous for a performance vehicle, and the cabin features Race-Tex trim with contrast stitching. For owners, the main day-to-day concerns are protecting the car from road debris and managing heat and glare, especially with the large glass area of the Coupe body.

The Bottom Line

The Cayenne Turbo GT proved that an SUV could be engineered with a genuine track mindset without giving up the practicality that makes the Cayenne a best-seller. Its Nürburgring record, standard carbon-ceramic brakes and extra power for the 2024 update make it one of the most capable combustion-powered SUVs Porsche has ever built.
