Changing from run-flat tires to conventional tires is a vehicle-system decision. Tire dimensions are only part of it. The plan also needs to address manufacturer restrictions, pressure monitoring, handling and what happens after a flat.
If you are considering VCORSA for that change, request confirmation for the exact product and vehicle. This article does not identify a VCORSA tire as run-flat or approve a conversion for any particular car.
Start with the vehicle’s replacement instructions
The USTMA run-flat bulletin, July 2024 revision prefers replacing run-flats with run-flats. It says to consult the vehicle and tire manufacturers before choosing four conventional replacements. A conversion removes run-flat mobility and can affect handling, TPMS displays or logic, and the applicability of original instructions. Run-flat and conventional tires should not be mixed as a normal setup; the bulletin describes only a limited emergency exception. Tire-specific servicing and repair restrictions also remain important.
Bring the exact owner’s manual and current tire identity to the consultation. If a provider says a conversion is permitted, ask for the applicable restrictions and a written installation plan. A social-media example of the same model car is not that confirmation.
Make the mobility plan before buying tires
What would you do if a tire could no longer carry the vehicle? Resolve that question while parked at home. Check the vehicle’s approved roadside procedure and the equipment it can actually accommodate.
A spare requires more than a place in the trunk: compatibility and its operating instructions need confirmation. A mobility kit also has a defined scope and instructions; it does not repair every kind of damage. Roadside assistance is a service arrangement with its own terms. Ask what your plan covers instead of assuming one option replaces all the others.
Use our temporary-spare guide for that equipment discussion. Keep the chosen roadside instructions accessible without relying on an internet connection.
Four checks for the installer handoff
| Check | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|
| Vehicle permission and restrictions | The applicable manufacturer instruction for the actual configuration. |
| Complete tire specification | Model, size, load and speed description, wheel compatibility and intended positions. |
| Pressure-monitoring operation | Required setup work and the provider’s confirmation of normal operation. |
| Roadside plan | Approved equipment or assistance arrangement and the instructions you will use. |
Do not mark the job complete just because the tires fit on the wheels. Each unresolved row is a question for the provider before the car is returned to use.
Evaluate the reason for changing
Write down your priority: replacement availability, ride comfort, cost or another specific concern. Then ask which evidence supports the proposed solution. A promise that every conventional tire will ride better is too broad to evaluate. The actual tire, size, wheel, vehicle and comparison conditions matter.
For a cost comparison, request the complete installed price and any equipment needed for the new roadside plan. Comparing the tire-only price with the previous all-in bill hides part of the decision. Avoid adding mileage or comfort savings that have not been demonstrated for the proposed setup.
After installation, update the records
Keep the invoice, final tire-position record, operating instructions and any TPMS work completed. Tell anyone else who drives the car that its tire configuration and roadside procedure changed. Remove obsolete assumptions from your own notes, while retaining the original manual for the vehicle’s remaining instructions.
The VCORSA delivery and installation checklist can hold the installation closeout. Our support documentation guide helps organize any outstanding product questions.
Common questions
Can I use one conventional tire permanently with three run-flats?
Do not plan a permanent mixed setup. Ask the service provider to apply the exact vehicle and tire instructions and resolve any emergency replacement promptly.
Do all run-flats have the same distance and speed allowance?
Use the instructions for the actual tire and vehicle. Do not borrow a distance or speed limit from another product, and do not assume a damaged tire remains usable because it is labeled run-flat.
Does a pressure-monitoring system make an ordinary tire run-flat?
No. A warning system does not create run-flat capability. Treat any loss of pressure according to the vehicle’s instructions and the tires actually installed.
