A TPMS light that comes on during a cool morning and goes out later still needs a pressure check. The tire may have been marginally underinflated when cold, then warmed enough for the warning to disappear. The disappearing light does not establish that the tire contains the correct amount of air.

NHTSA identifies this on-and-off pattern as a reason to check and adjust cold pressure. Start with the vehicle’s Tire and Loading Information label, an accurate gauge, and its owner’s manual. If there is damage, rapid air loss, unusual handling, or a vehicle message telling you to stop, stop safely and arrange assistance.

Flashing and steady lights need different follow-up

NHTSA describes a TPMS malfunction indication that flashes for roughly 60–90 seconds and then stays illuminated. The sequence can repeat at later starts until the malfunction is corrected. Check the vehicle manual for the precise symbol and message used by your system.

A malfunction warning does not tell you that inflation is correct. It tells you that monitoring may be impaired. Measure the pressures and arrange the recommended system inspection. What if the light stays on after inflation?

Begin by confirming that the tires were actually measured and set correctly. Check the unit shown on the gauge and display, the relevant axle recommendation, and the conditions at the time of adjustment. A warm reading set to a cold target can leave the underlying cold pressure too low.

Next, follow the owner’s manual for the system’s update, relearn, or calibration procedure. These are vehicle-specific steps. There is no single reset sequence, driving speed, or waiting period appropriate to every system. Never keep adding air simply to force the indicator to disappear.
