Start a window tint purchase with two questions: which glass do you want to cover, and who will install the film? Those answers help you choose between uncut roll material and a pre-cut pattern. The shade comes next, along with the requirements that apply to your vehicle and window position.

Read VLT as light transmission
Visible light transmission, or VLT, describes the percentage of visible light that passes through a material. A lower VLT number means less visible light passes through it. A 5% film is therefore darker than a 50% film. The number does not describe the percentage of heat blocked.

Account for the glass already on the vehicle
The film is only one part of the finished window. The original glass also affects light transmission. A useful approximation multiplies the two transmission values: glass transmitting 80% of visible light with film transmitting 50% gives approximately 40% combined transmission, because 0.80 × 0.50 = 0.40.
This arithmetic is a planning estimate, not a measurement or a compliance certificate. Ask an installer to evaluate the existing glass and measure the completed window when confirming compliance. Do not assume that a film labeled with a particular percentage produces the same percentage after installation.
Choose the material format around the job

A roll can suit an installer who wants to plan a custom layout. Confirm the required width, length and waste allowance before ordering. A pre-cut pattern can reduce pattern-making work when it matches the actual vehicle. Neither format removes the need to follow the film’s installation instructions.
Match more than the make and year
In the finder, select the exact model and trim, then the model-year range that includes your vehicle. Compare the pattern diagram with the glass. Body style, fixed versus roll-up sections, sensors, openings and exterior modifications can matter.
Read the window position carefully. A driver-side roll-up piece, a passenger-side fixed piece and a sunroof pattern are different products. An interior label and an exterior label also describe different intended placements; follow the selected product’s directions.
Check the included-pieces list before comparing prices. One window pattern is not a complete vehicle kit. A pair of side-window pieces does not automatically include quarter glass or the rear window. Save the product identifier and diagram when discussing fitment with an installer.
Separate shade from material and performance
VLT, UV rejection, heat rejection and film construction answer different questions. Do not infer ceramic construction from a dark photograph or a low VLT number. Read the selected SKU’s material description and performance information, and compare values measured on the same basis.
Also consider how the vehicle is used. The view through the glass changes with lighting conditions. Discuss visibility, existing factory glass and your installation plan before selecting a shade solely for appearance.
Check the applicable requirements before buying
Requirements vary by jurisdiction, vehicle classification and glass position. Consult the relevant motor-vehicle authority and your installer for current requirements. Product availability does not establish that a film is permitted on every window.
