UTQG separates three tire characteristics: comparative treadwear, wet straight-line braking traction, and resistance to heat under specified tests. It does not give you an expected mileage, a snow rating, a recommended pressure, or a complete performance ranking.
Use the grades as one part of a tire comparison after checking the required size, load capacity, speed capability, and operating category. The governing U.S. source is 49 CFR 575.104, Uniform Tire Quality Grading standards. Its test conditions and limitations matter as much as the letters printed on a sidewall.
Read the three fields separately
A listing may compress the grades into something like 400 AA A. That string is easier to understand when you separate it into its three fields. The following is a hypothetical teaching example; it is not a VCORSA specification.

Keep the words beside the grades when recording a product specification. “AA A” and “A A” are different combinations. A letter shown without its field can be mistaken for a tire’s speed symbol, which answers a different question.
Treadwear is comparative, not an odometer prediction
The treadwear grade comes from a prescribed wear-testing framework. The federal explanation uses a reference comparison to communicate relative performance under controlled conditions. It also warns that actual use can depart substantially from the comparison because driving habits, maintenance, road characteristics, and climate differ.
That is why multiplying a treadwear number by a convenient mileage factor is not a defensible ownership estimate. A grade of 400 does not mean 40,000 miles. Nor does a higher number, by itself, establish the best tire for your priorities.
When someone says one grade should last twice as long as another, ask whether they mean the standardized comparison or a real-world claim about two exact tires. Those are different statements. A real-world mileage comparison would need applicable evidence about the actual products and operating conditions.
The federal UTQG explanation supports using the grade as limited comparative information. It does not remove the need to review the exact tire’s documentation, service requirements, and any separate written mileage warranty.
Traction grades cover a specific wet-braking test
The traction grades run from AA to A, B, and C. They describe performance on specified wet asphalt and concrete surfaces under controlled straight-ahead braking conditions.
The regulation explicitly excludes acceleration, cornering, hydroplaning, and peak-traction characteristics from what that assigned grade measures. That limitation matters to an enthusiast comparing tires for a powerful street car. A traction grade cannot tell you how two tires launch, how they feel through a corner, or how they behave in standing water.
It also cannot establish snow or ice capability. Look for appropriate category information and documented winter markings separately. Treat a sentence such as “AA means this tire is excellent in every wet situation” as broader than the grade supports.
If wet braking is a priority, the grade is a useful field to record. To compare actual stopping behavior beyond the grade, look for a disclosed test of the exact products with vehicle, size, surface, conditions, and method stated. Do not turn a sidewall letter into an invented stopping distance.
Temperature grades describe heat resistance under test
The temperature grades are A, B, and C, with A highest. They address resistance to heat generation and the ability to dissipate heat in controlled testing on an indoor laboratory wheel.
They are not a forecast of how hot your tire will become on a particular trip. They also do not mean the tire is suited to every cold-weather condition. “Temperature A” is not a winter classification or a minimum outdoor-temperature instruction.
The regulation’s temperature explanation assumes correct inflation and no overloading. It warns that excessive speed, insufficient inflation, and excessive load can produce heat buildup and tire failure. A favorable grade does not cancel those operating requirements.

UTQG, speed symbol, load index, and warranty are separate
The service description beside the size contains information such as load index and speed symbol. UTQG is a different set of fields. A speed symbol does not supply a treadwear warranty, and a temperature grade does not replace the required speed capability.
Likewise, a written mileage warranty is a commercial policy with its own eligibility and conditions. Do not assume that a UTQG number establishes a warranty or that a warranty guarantees the tire remains suitable until that mileage.

Why some tires do not show UTQG
UTQG is not a universal label for every kind of tire. The federal rule applies to new pneumatic passenger-car tires and specifies exceptions, including winter-type snow tires, temporary or space-saver spares, certain small-diameter tires, and qualifying limited-production tires.
Do not interpret an absent grade as a grade of zero. First identify the tire type and whether the grading requirement applies. A comparison between a passenger tire and a different tire class needs the appropriate specifications for each, not a made-up value in an empty spreadsheet cell.
If a passenger-tire listing lacks grades you expect to find, request the manufacturer’s exact product documentation. The absence of information on a retail page does not establish that the physical tire has no marking or that it falls within an exception.
Compare exact products with this evidence sheet
Use one row per tire size and version, not one row per brand. Leave unknown fields marked “not verified” until the applicable record resolves them.

This sheet adds a useful discipline: a blank evidence field stays blank rather than becoming a favorable assumption. Two tire sizes from one family should not automatically inherit each other’s specifications. Check the exact records for both.
Example: why a single score cannot choose the tire
Imagine two hypothetical passenger tires with the same size designation. Tire A is listed as 400 AA A; Tire B as 600 A A. Those fictional values let you compare the stated UTQG fields, but they do not identify the better purchase.
You still need their load and speed capability, actual category, wheel compatibility, intended conditions, and reliable product evidence. The higher treadwear grade does not prove a mileage outcome. The higher traction grade does not answer every wet-handling question. Matching temperature grades do not make the tires interchangeable.
If either tire fails a vehicle requirement or lacks support for the conditions you need, the grade comparison cannot repair that mismatch. Eliminate unsuitable options first; compare the relevant evidence among the remaining ones.

What to send when specifications conflict
Send the retailer or manufacturer the exact SKU, full size and service description, and links or photos showing the conflicting values. Ask which current technical record applies to that product version and whether the listing needs correction. Include a clear photo of the actual tire if you already own it.
Keep the response with the comparison sheet and date it. A statement about a different size, an older production version, or a similar family name does not resolve the original discrepancy. If the answer remains unclear, leave the grade unverified and choose only after the information needed for your decision is established.
This process is especially useful when a marketing article repeats a specification without identifying its source. The article can explain a grade, but it should not become the sole authority for the product value it repeats.
