An XL marking is a capacity designation, not a promise of extra grip or permission to carry more than the vehicle allows. Load index and inflation must be considered together, using the exact tire specification and the vehicle’s requirements.
When comparing VCORSA sizes, record the complete service description for each SKU. Do not carry a load rating from one product photograph or size over to the rest of the range. Similar-looking tires can have different specifications.

The USTMA service manual’s load-capacity section explains that an XL tire needs the appropriate higher inflation to provide its additional maximum capacity. An equal or higher load index does not automatically establish equal capacity at every pressure, particularly when changing tire standards or designations.
The practical consequence is simple: ask the installer to verify the proposed tire at the required pressure. Comparing only the largest load number on the sidewall leaves the application check unfinished.
Why dividing vehicle weight by four is incomplete
A shopping calculation based on curb weight leaves out how the vehicle is loaded and how that load is distributed. As an example of vehicle-specific documentation, the Model 3 owner’s manual definitions distinguish curb weight, loaded vehicle weight and the load assigned to each axle. Use your own vehicle’s manual and requirements rather than transferring that model’s specifications to another car.
For an installer conversation, bring the vehicle identification, usual passengers and cargo, and any change in use. “Daily commute plus family road trips” is more useful context than an unloaded scale number without an explanation of what it represents.
Resolve mismatched listings before checkout
Imagine the product title shows a size, the photo shows a service description, and a separate chart lists a different rating. Do not choose whichever entry appears strongest. Save the SKU and the conflicting references, then request one confirmed specification for the tire being supplied.

Copy these fields into the installation request:
- Vehicle year, model, trim and drivetrain.
- Current front and rear tire designations and the vehicle reference being used.
- Proposed VCORSA model, SKU, size, service description and load category.
- Wheel specifications and any relevant vehicle modifications.
- Required capacity and the applicable load-and-inflation reference.
- Installer’s conclusion, documented operating pressure and unresolved questions.
Leave unknown fields marked “awaiting confirmation.” An empty field is easier to resolve than a guessed specification repeated into an order, invoice and subsequent article.
Common questions
Does XL mean run-flat?

Can a higher-rated tire increase my vehicle’s payload?
Do not use a tire substitution to increase the vehicle’s permitted load. Ask the installer to confirm the complete application against the vehicle requirements.
